Have you ever sat in a meeting and wondered whether legal was being seen as a true business partner or just the team people called when something was already stuck? Most legal teams want to add value, but in-house counsel value is often overlooked when in-house lawyers get buried in contracts, approvals, and urgent requests until the day becomes all engine and no strategy.
That tension came through clearly in a recent conversation with Vinaya Ganesan, General Counsel for Europe and head of legal and compliance at Firstsource Solutions. She has spent years helping businesses close major deals while building legal teams that stay commercially relevant. Her perspective was simple but powerful: driving business value, especially for in-house legal counsel, is not about doing everything. It is about solving the right problems at the right time in a way the business actually feels.

Start With the Problems the Business Feels
One of the most useful ideas Vinaya shared is that legal teams should listen for pain points, not just legal questions. A business leader may not come to legal and say, “I have a structural issue you can help solve.” They might say, “We keep losing bids,” “This process is too slow,” or “Why can’t we sell here?” This approach can directly impact in-house counsel value by aligning legal solutions with business needs.
The real value comes when legal pauses and asks, “Is this a problem I can help solve?” Sometimes the answer is no. But sometimes the answer opens a much bigger door. Vinaya shared an example where the business was missing opportunities because teams assumed they needed a local entity in every market to provide services. By stepping in, gathering the right people, and reframing the issue, legal helped unlock revenue that had been sitting on the table, demonstrating the added value in-house counsel brings to strategic decisions.
Build a Team That Thinks Beyond Tasks
Another smart point from Vinaya was that value creation should not sit only with the GC. Everyone on the legal team can contribute to it. A paralegal can improve an NDA process. A junior lawyer can spot delays in contract flow. Someone with project management instincts can track legal improvement work across the department, all of which contribute to the broader in-house counsel value seen by the business.
That matters because the small things shape the business’s view of legal just as much as the big ones. An NDA may seem minor, but it is often a first impression. If that interaction is slow, confusing, or overly rigid, the business remembers it. If it is smooth and thoughtful, legal earns trust early. Actually, fostering in-house counsel value comes from empowering each person to see themselves as problem solvers and protectors of the business.
How In-House Counsel Value Grows With Modern Business Thinking
Vinaya’s more for less mindset is not really about cost cutting. It is about being smart with resources while refusing to compromise quality. That can mean using legal operations principles, adopting the right technology, testing offshore support in the right areas, or working with specialists who solve problems efficiently—for modern teams, prioritizing in-house counsel value drives sustainable growth.
The bigger takeaway is simple: no problem is too small for legal to solve if solving it helps the business move. In-house counsel create the most value when they stay curious, stay approachable, and keep looking for friction others have stopped noticing. Indeed, maximizing in-house counsel value ensures legal becomes a true growth partner.
